His arrogance is one thing but many are thrown by how Jones seems to think that as long as the Cowboys get press, things are going fine, no matter how bad the team does. Many others have made the same observation, Jones insists on being part of a process he doesn’t understand and that’s done as much damage to the Cowboys as helped them. Johnson has said the key reason he left was because he couldn’t stand the fact that he pulled off major moves (like the Herschel Walker trade) and Jones insisted on taking credit for them. The key issue is that Jones is one of those owners who considers himself a football expert when he’s not and the fact he’s also the general manager makes it worse. Since then, however, the Cowboys have failed to make the big game and many feel that the reason for that is Jones himself. The first year was worse with 1-15 but Jones and head coach Jimmy Johnson would rebound majorly by building the Cowboys into a team that would win three Super Bowls in four years and set a new standard for excellent play. When he took over as owner of the Cowboys in 1988, the once-great franchise had sunk badly, ending with a 3-13 record. For better or worse, most associate “America’s Team” with Jones, which is what he wants. There’s no denying the influence Jerry Jones has had on the Dallas Cowboys.
